The centre at Wat Thmey is located within the compound of a Buddhist temple (Wat Thmey). One part of the land was given to us for an initial period of seven years. After this period, the land with all the buildings will theoretically become property of the temple. The other part of the land is rented.
Drop-In
The Drop-in is located on the main road about 100m from the border.
It's main goal is to provide a save day- and night-shelter for vulnerable children (street-children, substance-abusing children, working-children and children vulnerable of being trafficked or sexually exploited). We offer them a place to sleep, food, personal and communal hygiene, basic medical care and counselling.
Day activities include a one hour non-formal education program for children working at the border. The goal is to take these children off the border and to integrate them into public school, the day-care or into vocational training.
Children using substances and traumatize children are convinced to join the theatre program at the Rehabilitation Centre or are referred to other services.
The Drop-in staff also regularly tours the streets of Poipet and the border area. They communicate and play with the children and supply them with information about available services and on topics such as substance-abuse, HIV/AIDS and child-trafficking.
An important part of the work consists in community work. In order to find the best solution for the child, the social-workers have to do counselling and conduct interviews with the child as well as with her/his family. After carefully considering the family situation, the social-workers decide together with the child and the family (if possible) about future options. If ever possible the goal is to reintegrate the child into her/his family.
Rehabilitation Centre
The goal is to rehabilitate two groups of up to 20 substance-abusing and traumatized children per year. In a pleasant and protected surrounding, we try to stabilize the personalities of the children and to prepare them for a live free from substance abuse.
The schedule at the Rehabilitation Centre includes daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, gardening, maintenance and building as well as workshops in carpentry and woodcarving. The children are also taught in Khmer reading and writing and mathematics.
As part of the program, we are creating a theatre show together with the children. The theatre is about trafficking, substance abuse, violence and other issues related to the life of the children in the streets. The show is presented twice per year at different locations in and around Poipet. It also serves as a prevention campaign on substance abuse, child abuse and child trafficking.
After considering the living circumstances of the children and the situation of their r family, their educator and social worker will decide together with the child (and the family, if possible) about future options (reintegration back home, referral to the Residential Centre, referral to other NGO's, integration into formal or non formal education). Regular follow-up is being held after the reintegration or referral.
Reception Centre
For a maximum of 30 abused community children and trafficked children repatriated or deported from Thailand.
The children are living together with their educators. They participate half-day in one of our education programs. The goal of the Reception Centre is, to reintegrate the children back into their families in the short to medium term. After the reintegration, the child will continue to visit our Day-Care Centre. Eventually the child will be sent to public school.
Day-Care Centre
The Day-Care Centre is an important tool to support the reintegration of trafficked children into their families and to prevent trafficking to Thailand. Every day up to 150 children attend the Day-Care Centre half-day. The majority of the children need the rest of the day to earn income for themselves and/or their families.
The informal education program at the Day-care centre focuses on Khmer reading and writing and mathematics. Awareness rising campaigns on issues such as trafficking, substance abuse, children rights, health and HIV/AIDS are completing the curriculum.
In addition, we offer one meal per day and medical care free of charge to reduce financial strains for parents and therefore contributing to the financial recovery of the families.
The goal of the Day-Care Centre is to integrate the children into public school or to refer them to a vocational training according to their needs.
Medical-Clinic
We provide basic medical care free of charge for children attending our programmes. Once per year we also connect with the public health services for vaccination.
Children not attending our program have to be brought to the clinic by their adult caretaker. They are treated in exchange of a symbolic fee.
During the consultation our doctor is educating the caretaker about issues related to the prevention of diseases. Our social workers, educators and teachers equally receive training from our doctor in health related issues.
In our Nutrition Program, we are supporting selected mothers who are not able to breastfeed their babies because of lack of food, hard working during pregnancy, disease or other reasons. Monitored by our doctor they get powder milk for their babies and medical advice on alternative nutrition methods.
Our doctor has more than 3000 consultations from the community per year. Children that can not be treated at our clinic are referred to Hospital, or to other places.
Social-Work
Our social workers provide counselling for children and their families. They do family-tracing and regular follow-up for all the children participating in our program.
- Community work and street work: Selection of children to attend our program, inform children and adults about available services of DTP or at other institutions, prevent child abuse
- Family tracing, Family reintegration and follow up (after reintegration)
- Day-Care follow-up: The social workers receive a daily attendance list from our Day-Care teachers. If a child did not come to class, a social worker will investigate on the reason of the absence.
- Integration into public school and regular follow-up at public school and at home.
Public school
The goal of the Day-Care Centre is to integrate the children into public school. Parents and children are carefully prepared for the transfer into public school.
Our social workers will help to facilitate the integration into public school and provide the necessary material assistance (Uniform, books, pencils, fees), if the parents are unable to do so.
Once at public school, our social workers will check with the public school teachers if the child is attending class regularly. If not our social workers will visit the family and the child and discuss with them the reason of the absence.
At the end of each school year the social workers will reassess the family situation and the situation of the child in order to decide whether our assistance is still necessary or not.
