The activities at Samarkum
 English

Samarkum is about 7 km outside Poipet, next to one of the resettlement areas (Prochea Thorn Village also known as NPA). The land was given to DTP in July 2001 by a Cambodian association for an unlimited duration as long as we used it to provide a social service.

Day-Care Centre
The Day-Care Centre at Samarkum has the same structure and concept as the Day-Care Centre at Wat Thmey. It was initiated at the request of UNICEF. The Day-Care Centre at Samarkum can receive up to 150 children.

Children are shared between the Day-Care Centre at Samarkum and the Day-Care Centre at Wat Thmey according to the location of their home. The goals and contents of the informal education program are the same as at the Day-Care Centre Wat Thmey.

Vocational Training
For older girls and boys there is a vocational training in knitting and tailoring. Apart from practicing knitting and tailoring, the children will be able to develop their literacy and mathematical skills.

A general education curriculum similar to the one used at the Day-Care Centre, but more age appropriate and gender sensitive including history, geography, Khmer morality and Khmer custom is completing the education.

Awareness rising campaigns on issues such as trafficking, substance abuse, children rights, health and HIV/AIDS are held at the same time as at the day care centre, but the children are usually separated according to their age and gender.

As at the Day-Care Centre, we offer one meal per day and medical care free of charge.

Things produced during class are sold and the profit is shared among the children.

Jobs Program
To give boys over 15 years of age the chance to learn in a business-like environment, DTP built a small water-purifying plant. Together with one teacher, the boys are treating the water and fill it into bottles. The drinking water is then sold in the community.

The training consists of technical competence in water purification, maintenance of equipment, sales and marketing. Training modules in basic literacy and mathematics as well as a general education curriculum, are provided through the week.

The children are also participating in awareness rising campaigns held at the day care centre. The training is usually the whole day. Less advanced children can join the Day-Care program half day if they want.

The teenagers are paid a small salary. In addition to that, they get a small percentage of the income generated by the selling of the water.

The goal is to generate enough income to cover all expenses for this vocational training and to get some benefit to support other activities of DTP.

Residential Centre
The Residential Centre is designed for children who's family situation and personal condition need to be addresses in a long-term perspective.

The Residential Centre can shelter up to 40 children. Most of them have been repatriated and deported from Thailand. Others include abused community children and former substance abusing street-children.

While the children stay at the centre they will join one of our education programs or attend public school. Our social-workers will assess their family situation with the goal to reintegrate the children into their extended families or to find other appropriate alternatives for their future.

Medical-Clinic
The Medical-clinic at Samarkum is an extension of the clinic at Wat Thmey. It is run by the same doctor and is offering the same services.

The clinic is open every afternoon in order to avoid transportation costs for our patients to at Wat Thmey. Our doctor is providing basic medical care for children from the community and children attending our programmes.

Loan Program
One reason for trafficking in Poipet is the lack of alternative income opportunities. To help preventing the trafficking of children to Thailand, we started a micro-loan program. The small loans are given to very poor families with a lot of children (mostly widowed single mothers).

The interest free loans have to be used to generate stable income for the family. Our loan staff is doing regular follow-up with the participants. During these follow-up's, they are consulting them in their business activities. They are also raising their awareness on issues such as child trafficking, health and hygiene.

Participating families are also encouraged to send their children to public schoo.l

Social-Work
Our social workers provide counselling for children and their families. They do family-tracing and regular follow-up for all the children participating in our program.

The activities and services provided by our social workers are the same as at Wat Thmey.

See Social-work Wat Thmey

Public School
The goal of the Day-Care Centre is to integrate the children into public school. As at Wat Thmey, our social workers will help to facilitate the integration into public school, provide further assistance and do regular follow-up at school and at home.
