Shelter for children with special needs in Phnom Penh
 English

Background

Because there are almost no long-term shelters for handicapped children in Cambodia, the Centre in Neak Loeung accepted to receive those children.

However, except from our own, limited programmes, there are no education programmes for handicapped children in Neak Loeung.

In Phnom Penh there are several institutions offering education, but no shelter for handicapped children.

Instead of extending our education programmes for handicapped children in Neak Loeung, we decided to try to use the existing resources and just fill the apparent gaps.

As an extension of our existing project in Neak Loeung we will therefore open a shelter for up to 20 children with special needs in Phnom Penh.

Handicapped Children

The shelter is open for physically and/or mentally handicapped children with special educational needs. They attend external training and education programmes according to their needs and capabilities.

To avoid having a group of only handicapped children and to contribute to their integration into society, we decided to mix them with non-handicapped youth.

Jobs for Adolescent Girls and Boys from the Provinces

Adolescent girls from the province who would like to continue their education at the University in Phnom Penh or at other schools, have difficulties to find a save shelter if they do not have any relatives in Phnom Penh.

There is also a lack of job opportunities for underprivileged young adults in the provinces. We will support the teenagers who have completed a vocational training in our Centres in Neak Loeung or Poipet by helping them to find jobs and places for further education.

The goal is to assist them towards an independent living until their personal and financial situation is stable enough so that they can live by themselves.
